Social Media: fad or the next best thing?

Social media as we have learned plays a big part of how we carry on our daily lives.  Statistics show that facebook could be the third largest country if it were a country, and youtube is the second largest search engine.  What does this say about the generation now....younger people are choosing to communicate via blogs and texting rather than face to face communication.

So, is social media a fad or the biggest shift since the industrial revolution?  My opinion....it's the biggest shift.  But then again, is it social media that's the biggest shift or is it the tools that allow us to use social networking sites the next best thing?
Many critiques would criticise that the internet was the foundation and gateway to social networking.  Without the internet one could not access social networking sites, and this blog being a form of social media would not exist.

In the past people communicated via telephone, writing letters, or simply sitting down in the living room and catching up.  Now, social networking has infringed on people's communication skills as people do not have to call or see an individual.  Social media sites allow for people to see what goes on in others personal life by viewing their pictures, reading their blogs, and seeing "what’s on their mind."  E-mail was once a way for people to communicate and share photo's, but as we have seen people are no longer choosing that route, as the experts say "generation y and x consider it a passe."  Now people of all ages are choosing social media networks such as facebook, flickr, twitter, and podcast to communicate.

In a nutshell social media is the biggest shift that won't last.  People will see the drawbacks of using these social sites as many employers do use this as a point of reference to determine your personality and professionalism.  As the stats show 80% of companies use social media for recruitment.  Many people tend to post pictures of the stag they went to the night before, or a bachelor party that went out of control.  People are not being cautious enough when uploading or blogging things that are not privacy protected and can be viewed by just about anyone....hence criminals can never hide for long.

  1. I like how you have pointed out the negative points of social media in a few ways. I think that this is always important to remember the reality of this great means of communication. Social media is wonderful but too loosely used far too often.

  2. amanda,

i couldn't agree more with the topic of privacy. people think that, once they delete a picture or post from facebook or twitter that it's deleted from everywhere, when it is certainly not. there is billions of stories of police using social networking to find criminals simply because they are too public.

    very interesting post,

  4. Amanda,

I have to agree with your post. Social media can be looked at from different perspectives, from the good and the bad. Although there are many advantages to social networking there can be many disadvantages as you have pointed out in your post. Privacy can be huge disadvantage if social networking is used irresponsibly. So that is a very good point because a person could (without knowing) be sending wrong impressions to certain people depending on their actions on sites such as Facebook. Also another negative factor that you have displayed is people using the internet to communicate. This could possibly create poor grammatical habits to teens using short terms such as lmao, lol, t2yl etc. Anyways, overall this was a pretty good post!

  5. I couldn't agree with you more, I like how you looked at the positives and negatives of social media. I always just looked at the positives of it but now that you put it in that perspective it really makes me think....... I find my self texting all the time and it really does infringe on my communication skills. It's just not the same as a face to face conversation. I also find people miss interpreting texts because they don’t have the emotions with it and may take a positive comment negatively. As well every social event I go if someone is taking photos you know it will be on Facebook within the next 24hrs. Do I like this.......NO. I find it allows people to much access to my personal life. So although I do love being able to connect with people in a variety of ways it definitely has its negatives.

  6. To start - choose a better title colour that people can read on your background! You seem to share my posted leaning which is on the fence because SM straddles both fad and fixture. A shift that won't last. Funny, if you think about it, human beings are plain weird. We go gaga about phone that allow texting or sending text via email. Hey, I gotta invention that blows all that away - forget messages that you wait for to clear a network and shows up in a mailbox 3-15 minutes after you send it- how about actually talking to someone live, in real time? It's called a phone people.
